Wireless Emergency Alerts (WEA) - also known as Commercial Mobile Alert System or CMAS - is a national alert system that enables emergency management officials to rapidly disseminate warnings and safety information via text alerts to wireless phones based on their geographic location. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is responsible for receiving the safety information and forwarding the alerts to participating wireless carriers such as Sprint. Alerts can come from the President of the United States, the National Weather Service (NWS) or state and local emergency operations centers. This system is integrated with the national alert system that serves television and radio stations today.
